The Beanie Wearing Snowman

Winter is drawing near and who doesn't need a snowman applique to add an extra special touch to a scarf, pillow, blanket, or place mat! There are so many great places this adorable winter crochet applique can be used! 

To make it even more unique this guy is wearing a beanie! He is "stylin" and "profilin" ha ha! I hope you enjoy this fun winter applique pattern! Please share your photos with me this winter! I love seeing all the places in the world these appliques wind up! 



1) Yarn - worsted weight 4

  • White

  • Black

  • Orange (I used coral in the example)

  • PurpleGreen

2) Hook - E 3.5 mm & G 4.5 mm

3) Needle - if sewing applique

4) Hot glue - to add extra security to safety yes. You can also glue your pieces together.

5) Scissors


Sc - single crochet

Sl st - slip stitch

Hdc - half double crochet 

Sc2tog - single crochet two st together

MR - Magic ring or if you prefer  a chain ring, chain 4, sl st into first ch, make your Round 1 stitches around

the ring and tail. Pull tail tight to close. 

Skill level - Beginner/Intermediate. If you are unsure of any stitches Youtube will be your best friend!

There are great tutorials on the different stitches and on crocheting in rounds.

Pattern Info -  Feel free to have fun with this pattern! You have creative license! This is a great

project to use up scrap yarn! Choose any colors you desire! This is a quick easy project!

Pattern Instructions

*beginning chains do not count as st 

*leave long tails if sewing together or weave in ends if using hot glue

Head (white):  4.5 mm hook

Begin:  Make a MR

Round 1: Ch 2, 10 hdc in magic ring, sl st to join. (10 st)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st, sl st to join. (20 st)

Round 3: Ch 2, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in next st, *1 hdc, 2 hdc* around, sl st to join, fasten off. (30 st)

Body (white):  4.5 mm hook

Begin:  Make a MR

Round 1: Ch 2, 10 hdc in magic ring, sl st to join. (10 st)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st, sl st to join. (20 st)

Round 3: Ch 2, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in next st, *1 hdc, 2 hdc* around, sl st to join. (30 st)

Round 4: Ch 2, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next, * 1 hdc in 2 st, 2 hdc in next* around, sl st to

join, fasten off. (40 st)

Eyes (black):  will need  2

Begin: Place safety eyes in desired spots and after the backings have been put on the safety eyes cover with

hot glue to add extra security. 

Buttons (black): 3.5 mm hook - will need to make 3

Begin: Color B - MR, ch 1. 

Round 1: 2 sc in in magic ring, sl st to join, fasten off. (2st)

Nose (coral/orange/ or choice of color): 3.5 mm hook

Begin: Ch 3 

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc next  st, fasten off. (2st)

Beanie (choice of colors) :  3.5 mm hook

Begin:   Color C Ch 11

Row 1: Sc in 2nd st from hook, sc in 9, ch 1. (10st)

Row 2: Turn, sc 10, change colors D, ch 1. (10st)

Row 3: Turn, sc 4, sc2tog, sc4, ch1. (9st)

Row 4: Turn, sc 2, sc2tog, sc2tog, sc 3, ch 1. (7st)

Row 5: Turn, sc 3, sc2tog, sc 2, change colors E, ch 1. (6st)

Row 6: Turn, *sc2tog* repeat *to* 2 more times, ch 1. (3st)

Row 7: Turn, sc 3, fasten off. 

Mini Pom Pom(choice of colors):  *see pictures below

Begin:   With a fork wrap 3 strands combined around the prongs between 7 to 10 times depending on how

thick you want yours. With a separate piece of yarn cut to about 6 inches thread through the middle prong of

the fork and tie around the center of the wrapped yarn tightly and knot. Pull the entire wrapped and tied section

off fork and cut the loops on each side and fluff.

Scarf (choice of color):  4.5 mm hook

Begin:   Ch 52

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd st from hook, hdc in 50, fasten off. (51st)

Assembly -  Lay out the pieces first to get your desired look. Suggested assembly steps: 

1) Attach safety eye, leaving room for hat. Coat safety eye backing with hot glue for extra security.

2) Sew or glue nose on face.

3) Sew or glue buttons on tummy

4) Sew or glue head and tummy together.

5) Sew pom pom to top of hat.

6) Sew hat to top of head.

Wrap scarf around middle where head and tummy meet and sew or glue to secure.
